Today, you are going to go back to working on your graphing project. Remember that you saved your file in your documents folder. Here are a few challenges for you. If you don’t finish, don’t panic. We will pick up with this again next week.

Challenge #1 – graph the second table

At the end of class on Tuesday, we created a second table. This table shows you the top Rice Exporters (people who ship out rice) in the world for the years 1998 and 1999. See if you can make a double bar graph of the data. The title of your graph should be Rice Exporters.

Challenge #2 – Create a sheet called Line Graphs

Remember, we talked about how spreadsheets can actually function a bit like workbooks. We’re going to take advantage of that right now by creating a new sheet for our line graphs.

  1. Click on the plus-sign next to the word Sheet, to add a new sheet
  2. Re-name your sheet to Line Graphs by double-clicking on the words Sheet 2

Challenge #3 – Graph this data
This table shows the number of radio stations that broadcast either news or talk shows during the years 1996-200. Make a line graph of the data.

Year 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000
News/Talk Stations 1116 1111 1131 1159 1139

Excellent! Now, add a new table to this sheet. Remember, click on Tables and choose Headers.

This time, you want to make a line graph to show the price of a gallon of gas, in Mexico, over the course of 6 years. Use the table below to make your graph.

Year 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000
Price (in dollars) 1.12 1.26 1.47 1.50 1.80 2.02

Challenge #4 – Using spreadsheets to do math
Now we’re going to get tricky. Not only do we want to graph our data, but we also want to use the spreadsheet to do our math for us. Create a third sheet, name it Recycling Challenge, and then get started on the table below.

The table below has been filled in to show you the amount of material saved if 1 Ton of paper is recycled. You want to fill in the third column to show the amount of material saved if 1,000 Tons of paper is recycled. To figure out this number, see if you can make the spreadsheet do the math. (HINT: think about formulas)

Material Saved Amount Saved per Ton of Recycled Paper Amount Saved per 1,000 Tons of Recycled Paper
Water (in gallons) 7,000
Oil (in gallons) 380
Air Pollution (in pounds) 60
Landfill Space (in cubic yards) 3.3
Energy (in kilowatt-hours) 4,100

If you’re reading this, you’re doing awesome! Can you graph that data? What type of graph should you use?
